How to land an internship β€” student guide
1
Apply earlier than you think
Summer internships recruit in September–November. Most students apply in March and wonder why everything is full. Set a recurring reminder every September to check openings.
2
Use your school's job board first
Waterloo WaterlooWorks, UofT CLNx, TMU Career Boost, York Career Centre β€” employers post exclusively to these before going public. Check them weekly.
3
LinkedIn is your second job
Connect with recruiters directly. Many internship positions are filled through referrals before they're even posted. A short LinkedIn message to a recruiter or recent grad costs nothing.
4
Tailor every application
One generic resume and cover letter won't work. Spend 20 minutes customizing for each company. Mention something specific about why you want to work there.
5
Negotiate your pay
Most students don't negotiate internship pay. Ranges are usually posted β€” ask for the top of the range if you have competing offers. The worst they can say is no.
6
Track what you earn
Use Fintro to budget your co-op income. A 4-month term at $25/hr full-time is ~$17,000 before tax. With a plan, you can cover tuition AND save something.
