Pro tip — apply to everything you qualify for

Most students only apply to 1–2 scholarships. The students who win are usually the ones who apply to 10+. Many of these take under 30 minutes. A $1,000 scholarship is worth more per hour than almost any part-time job.

How to maximize your chances
1️⃣
Apply through your school first

UofT, TMU, and York all have portals (AwardSpring, etc.) where one application matches you to dozens of awards. Start there before external scholarships.

2️⃣
Update your OSAP if you win

Any scholarship you receive needs to be reported to OSAP. It may reduce your loan (not your grant). Still worth applying — less debt is a win.

3️⃣
Set calendar reminders for deadlines

Most scholarships open in fall (October–December) and close in winter (January–March). Miss the window and you wait a whole year. Set reminders now.

4️⃣
Smaller awards add up fast

Five $500 bursaries = $2,500. That's a semester of groceries and transit. Don't dismiss small awards — they're less competitive and still real money.
